Here are Carla’s top tips for anyone wanting to transfer their skills and build a second career in the nonprofit world.
1: Identify and find the way to best articulate your transferrable skills
I would say this is truly the cornerstone of making the transition. Take your time to refine the language you use to articulate the skills you bring to add value to the organisation. Be observant and continue refining this as you progress through your charity experience – the nuance of your skills will evolve and new skills will appear that you perhaps hadn’t considered before but add value and a different perspective in the charity space.
2: Be open minded
Within Fundraising or any other area, there are a wide variety of roles worth exploring and getting some hands-on experience if you can. This will only help in opening up more options as to where your skills might fit best.
3: Give it time
It takes time to learn the nuances of Fundraising and other areas within the charity sector, and as you learn it will become clearer where the best fit for your skills might be.
4: Volunteer at a charity you’d like to support
This is a great first step to get hands-on experience and find out if this is something you really enjoy and want to dedicate your time and professional career to. It will help you get a real feel for the environment and culture of the sector.
5: Make sure your values align with the mission
This will really make a difference in your work and dedication to the cause.
6: Apply to The Well Placed
It’s invaluable to have a community of like-minded people to connect with, share experiences, challenges, and receive great career support as you navigate this change.
